Thank you for your interest in our presentation at the Sound Education Conference,
held at Harvard University on November 2-3, 2018. We were honored to speak and engage with
so many wonderful podcasters and podcast fans. On Saturday, November 2nd, we held a talk titled
"From Meghan Markle to Louisa Adams: Using the Present to Enter the Past", in which we discussed
the benefits (and fun!) of taking pop culture and modern events and using them as a segue into
exposing friends, family, and listeners to new historical people, events, and ideas. Below you will find
all the materials used for our presentation. We hope you enjoy them.

Presentation description
From Meghan Markle to Louisa Adams: Using the Present to Enter the Past
Talking about history doesn’t have to require a pre-existing interest in the past. Join Footnoting History’s Elizabeth Keohane-Burbridge and Christine Caccipuoti for a presentation about using modern events like the recent royal wedding of England’s Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle as a gateway to discussing equally-interesting events of bygone times, such as US President John Quincy Adams’ marriage to London-born Louisa Johnson.

The INspiration
The inspiration for this panel came from one of our Special Edition episodes. Although we have released Special Edition topics from the very start of our podcast in 2013, the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gave us the opportunity to stress one of the less-obvious parallels of history and the past. While many places were discussing another royal who married a commoner (Edward VIII, who abdicated in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson), we flipped the script and talked about an American President (John Quincy Adams) who married a London-born woman (Louisa Johnson). This led to the episode shooting up our popularity list and becoming our 3rd most downloaded episode ever in less than four months.
