What is a Podcast?

A podcast is, at its most basic, a radio show that is pre-recorded and available for you to listen to anywhere that you have a connection to the internet, and sometimes even when you don't. At Footnoting History, our episodes are each self-contained. This means you can choose which episodes you listen to and in what order, without worrying about missing anything.

how do I listen?

Conveniently, you can listen to our episodes without leaving this site! To find our most recent episodes, go to the Home page (click here). To browse our older episodes, go to our Archive Page (click here) and then click on the title of the episode that strikes your fancy.

Every episode listed on this website has a streaming audio player attached to it. The audio player allows you to listen to the episode on the spot. Here you can see what it looks like:
This audio player is for our episode titled "The Marriage of John Quincy and Louisa Adams".  To play it, click on the black triangle at the left (make sure your device has its volume on first!)

If you would prefer to listen to the episode when you are not connected to the internet, click the three dots on the right of the audio player. Choosing "Download" will save the file to your device, and then you can open it at your leisure and listen whenever you would like, without an internet connection.

But what if you don't want to visit us every time you want to listen to an episode? Thankfully, the internet has that all sorted out for you. You can "subscribe" to a podcast, which means that instead of you coming to us, our episodes get delivered directly to you as soon as we have released them.

how do i subscribe?

If you've read this far, it's likely you've decided you to subscribe to a podcast and have it delivered to your device upon release. Excellent choice! To do that, you will need to choose a program (or "app") where you want to listen to your favorite podcasts. Below, we have linked to the Footnoting History listings on a variety of popular podcast playing apps. Each app works slightly differently, so check them out and see which one works best with your device (some may only work for Apple devices, while others are only for Androids) and your personality, then follow the directions they provide for installing the app. The good news is once that is done, you can hit Subscribe/Follow/+ (or whichever other button that service uses) on the listing for the podcast of your choice and you never have to worry again because every time an episode is released it will appear like magic on the app for your enjoyment:
